To understand what Breaking Beta is you must first understand what “beta” is.

The climbing term “beta” first came about in the era of the Betamax, which was an old school videotape format that was eventually replaced by VHS. According to most people, the phrase “what’s the beta” was coined by the late Great Jack Mileski. He would record himself on Betamax tape completing routes and then he would share the tapes with people.

So, if beta is the agreed way to complete a route or problem, then breaking the beta would be doing it in a way that works better for you or in a way that is just different.

Who am I and why Breaking Beta?

You may notice I say “I” a lot and that is because everything that Breaking Beta is, is run by one person, me. I currently do all the admin, posts, graphic design, store management, copywriting, etc. The Breaking Beta community has been grown 100% organically. We grew this community by all the shares and comments on posts!  I love reading comments on posts and responding to dms. If you want to be featured on the Breaking Beta Official page find out how: HERE. How will we continue to grow this community? By doing all the things that you have already been doing! On a more personal level, my name is Sean and I started climbing in 2017 at Austin Bouldering Project and I have been hooked ever since. Climbing was a natural fit because it combines a unique aspect of problem solving and physical fitness, 2 important aspects of my life. I love to build and design and have created many things for my personal life. The idea of Breaking Beta came to me when I had several ideas for climbing products that I had never seen before or wanted to adapt for climbing. I have always been all for not doing what everyone else is doing and I wanted a brand name that reflected that. That is how the name Breaking Beta came to be! I moved to Salt Lake City, UT in 2022 to follow my passion for the outdoors and grow Breaking Beta!
